Spindle Cell Sarcoma of the Liver

The liver is an organ that is considered as a gland because it secretes chemicals, which is the bile. The bile is an important chemical in our body, which is responsible for breaking up fats into smaller ones so that the body can absorb it with ease.

Other than that, the liver also has lots of other functions, and these are some:

  • The liver detoxifies the blood so as to eliminate damaging chemicals like drugs and alcohol.
  • It also stores iron, vitamins and sugar in the form of glycogen.
  • Whenever you lack sugar in your body, the stored glycogens are converted into usable sugar, so your body can use it.

Spindle Cell Sarcoma of the Liver

Sarcoma is a type of cancer which may arise from a soft tissue or bone. In a soft tissue, it may be due to the abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle cells. This will be called spindle cell sarcoma. These cells are found covering your visceral organs and as well as in the walls of the blood vessels.

As the name implies, spindle cell sarcoma of the liver is a type of sarcoma that originates from the liver itself. Since the liver is a very vital organ in your body, it is very deadly to have this kind of condition. If the liver fails, other organs will also start to fail due to toxicity.

If a cancer starts in the liver, such as a spindle cell sarcoma liver, researchers said that there is a high chance (if not 100%) that the cancer cells will metastasize. This is the process of migration of cancer cells to other parts of the body via the blood vessels.

The high chance is related to the vascularity the liver. Due to metastases, there will be possible formation of other new tumors in other locations in your body such as the kidney or the lungs.

On the other hand, if there are other malignant cancers in your body (such as uterine sarcomas), there is also a high chance that it will metastasize to the liver. Again, it is because of the numerous blood vessels circulating in the liver.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms related to spindle cell sarcoma liver are less likely to be seen during the early stages of the cancer. That is why immediate checkup is recommended if you notice that you experience the following:

  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Feeling very full even eating a small meal
  • Enlarged spleen (you can pulpate it under the left side ribs)
  • Enlarged liver (you can pulpate it under the right side ribs)
  • Swelling of the abdomen
  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin)
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Visible enlarged veins on the belly

Treatment

The treatment prognosis of the spindle cell sarcoma of the liver is a challenge due to rapid metastases. That is why immediate control of the disease is vital for the patients. This can be done using chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
